The station is mostly covered by Finnish granite, and its distinguishing features are its clock tower and on each side of the main entrance two pairs of statues holding the spherical lamps. 

One of the station’s less known secrets is a private waiting lounge exclusively for use by the President of Finland and his/her official guests.

In December 1940 the former President of Finland Kyösti Kallio died at the station of a heart attack after having retired as president. Legend has it that he died in the arms of Marshal Mannerheim, who was the President of Finland in 1944-1946.
