Carl Ludvig Engel (1778-1840) who laid out The Helsinki Cathedral as well as The Senate Square was a German  architect. The at first orthodox cathedral was built as a tribute to The  Czar of Russia Nicholas I (1776-1885) and was called St. Nicholas Church until the independene of Finland in 1917. In 1959 it became a cathedral of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination.

The Helsinki Cathedral dominates the skyline of Helsinki. The white building with its green domes and zinc rooftop statues of the twelve apostles stands proud looking over the city to the sea and welcomes all visitors.
